Sodium fluoride
Description
Fluoride exerts its major effect by interfering with the demineralization mechanism of tooth decay. The aim is to create a fluorapatite-like remineralized veneer over the remaining surface of the enamel. This veneer is much more acid-resistant than the original hydroxyapatie and is more quickly formed than ordinary remineralized enamle would be. The cavity-prevention effect of fluoride is mostly due to these surface effects.
